Behind the Camera

About Me

Hello! My name is Nick Staples. I live just outside of Portland with my beautiful wife and two young boys, who together are my whole world.

I began landscape photography in 2018, when I bought a simple used DSLR (Nikon D3200) from a local photography shop. The images I capture here in Maine are inspired by my family’s history. The Staples family settled near Kittery in 1640 and have spread all over the state since. One of my ancestors was even the architect of Casco Bay’s Fort Gorges!

Photographing landscapes in Maine puts me in places that I can confidently say have not changed in thousands of years. Admittedly, some of my shots are a bit more modern, but my favorites are the sprawling natural scenes where I know that my great-great grandfather could have stood in the same spot, took the same deep breath, and felt the same immense gratitude.

In 2025, I’ve transitioned my primary focus to one-of-a-kind Maine camp portraits, using a unique combination of photography and digital design. If interested, let me know here.
